Players with this skill can Butcher animals and non-humanoid monsters to gain ingredients used in the creation of Potions. As a result, this skill is often paired with the [[Apothecary]] Crafting Profession. (Each character can learn only one Gathering and one Crafting profession.)
* Leveling up your new gathering skill, Butchering, happens through the killing and looting of animal type NPCs in Return of Reckoning. When you kill the animal NPC, right click on the corpse or use your loot hotkey to first obtain whatever items and coin dropped from the mob, then right click or loot hotkey again to obtain a butchering material from the corpse.
* Once a material is successfully looted, the corpse will disappear.
* The level of material that drops is first checked by your skill level, then by NPC level. It's a simple calculation: if you want material of a specific level, divide the material level by 5. This represents the minimum level mob that will drop the material. You can kill mobs within the range of four levels above that. For example, if I want to obtain level 50 materials, I need to farm level 10-14 mobs. 50 divided by 5 equals 10, plus 4 is 14. Level 15 mobs will drop level 75 materials.
* You can only receive materials within the range of your skill level. For example, if you are killing level 20 mobs to get level 100 materials to drop, but your skill level in Butchering is 87, you will only receive level 75 materials and lower.
* Each animal corpse you loot will have a chance to level your Butchering skill by one point, as long as it is within or above your skill level. For example, say my Butchering is currently level 75, and I'm killing level 20-24 mobs (which drop level 100 materials). I'll have a very good chance to level my Butchering up through level 100. If I'm killing level 15-19 mobs (which drop level 75 materials), I'll have a normal chance to level my Butchering through 75 (I might see a slow-down somewhere around 90 because the chance to level is shrinking as I continue leveling up); and if I'm killing level 10-14 mobs (which drop level 50 materials), I'll have a very low, or zero, chance to increase my Butchering past 75.

Butchering

Learn the Butchering Gathering skill to gain ingredients for Potions from Animals and Monsters.

Butchering is a Gathering skill in Return of Reckoning.

Players with this skill can Butcher animals and non-humanoid monsters to gain ingredients used in the creation of Potions. As a result, this skill is often paired with the Apothecary Crafting Profession. (Each character can learn only one Gathering and one Crafting profession.)

Learning the Butchering Skill

You can learn the Butchering skill by speaking to a Butcher in any of your faction's Capital cities:

Let's get to chopping!

Once you defeat an animal or monster, your cursor will become a Meat Cleaver to indicate if you can butcher it.

Now that you've got your meat cleaver and a hankering for fresh meat, it's time to kill some animals and chop them up to see what's inside. (Normal people do this all the time.)

Head into the world and find an animal or monster, and kill it. Once you've looted it of any items, you'll see your mouse cursor turn into a Meat Cleaver, which indicates that you can Butcher this corpse.

Right click to Butcher the corpse, which will grant you an item and will make the corpse vanish afterward.

Leveling up Butchering

Like Scavenging, Butchering is very easy to level as you can immediately begin chopping up any animal, no matter your Butchering level.

Each time you Butcher an animal or monster at or above your current skill level, you'll have a chance of gaining a level.

To quickly level up Butchering, look for large groups of monsters that you can AOE or kill together, then butcher them all rapidly afterward.

Butchering Tips

  • The level of the mob determines the level of ingredients you'll gain from Butchering, and every 5 levels a mob increases = +25 to the power of the items you'll find.
    • Example: For level 50 Materials, farm mobs level 10-14. For level 75 Materials, farm mobs level 15-19, and so on.
  • As with all Gathering and Crafting professions, you'll gain extra Crafting Bag space at level 100 and 200!
  • Any class can Butcher, but Classes that can AOE and farm large groups of mobs at once make this most convenient. As a few examples, Engineer, Slayer, Magus, and Marauder can make good Butchers.
  • While leveling, the power of the Butchering ingredients you find is limited by your own skill level. (To get level 200 materials, you'll need to hit level 200 Butchering first.)
  • Different animals and monsters all drop different types of ingredients. See the table further below for more info!

Making Money with Butchering

Some of the most sought-after Butchering ingredients are those used in the creation of Armor and Absorb Potions. You can farm these to either make the potions yourself, or sell the ingredients directly to other players.

A few good locations for level 40 players to farm are:

Armor Pot Farming:

  • Black Crag, Southeast area: Poisonwing Canyon PQ - There are tons of Wyverns here, including the cave that leads higher up. Both realms can farm these for Scales used to make Armor Potions.
  • Reikland, Southeast corner: You'll find a number of Scorpions located on the hillside just Northeast of Destruction's Fields of Reikland PQ. Both realms can farm these for scales used to make Armor Potions. (These are a mix of sub-40 and 40 mobs.)


Absorb Pot Farming:

  • Rekland, Northeast corner: Behind the Temple of Reikland you'll find a handful of level 40 bats, which can drop ingredients for Absorb potions. Both realms can farm these.
  • Caledor, Southeast Corner (58.6k / 52.6k): Up the cliffside you'll find a number of level 40 Terrorwing Bats, which can drop ingredients for Absorb potions. Both realms can farm these. (If Destruction, you'll need to enter the zone via Southwest Dragonwake.)
