Learn the Salvaging skill at the capital city of your realm. The "Salvager" NPC will teach you the specialization. Pair this with the trade skill Talisman Making.

Magical Salvaging allows you to extract fragments from gear.

Magical Salvaging

Magical Salvaging, or Salvaging, is a gathering profession that allows a player to break down gear and extract fragments from it.

Magical Salvaging will grant crafting ingredients that pair nicely with the Talisman Making Crafting Profession: Fragments, Magical Essence, and Gold Dust.

Of all the Gathering professions, Magical Salvaging is by far one of the most difficult and expensive to level quickly. However, once maxed at level 200, it can be used to guarantee powerful talismans ingredients.

How to learn Magical Salvaging

Speak to a Salvager in any Capital City to learn the skill.

Speak to vendors in your Capital City to learn this Gathering Profession.

  • For Order, speak to Franklin Meisse in the Altdorf Market.

Getting Started

To Salvage an item, first hit "V" or your default abilities button, and find the Magical Salvaging icon in your abilities. Drop this onto your hotbar, and either click it or hit that hotbar key, and then click on the item you'd like to Salvage.

You can gain the first 25 levels easily by purchasing Shattered Figurine from any Craft Supply Merchant.

These are only 50 copper each and will get you started on the grind towards 200.

  • PSA: When you break down an item with Magical Salvaging, that item is gone forever. Be careful not to accidentally break down gear you want to keep!

The grind to 200

Items that you can Salvage will say "Salvageable" in Orange, Yellow, Green, or White text to indicate your odds of success. Red text means you cannot attempt to Salvage it yet.

Leveling up Magical Salvaging quickly gets more difficult as you progress, as you will need to use items of at least Uncommon (Green) rarity or higher to continue growing.

Early-on, you can only break down weak gear, and there may be limited amounts or very expensive options on the player Auction House. As you level up, you'll slowly be able to break down stronger and stronger gear.

Each item you salvage has a chance to level up your skill, but sometimes you may need to break down many items in a row before gaining a level.

Leveling tip: NPCs with Salvageable items

Both Order and Destruction players can purchase low-level accessories from the Veteran Renown Gear Merchant that can be salvaged.

While a little costly, you can use these to level up consistently if you can't afford to purchase gear on the Auction House or aren't able to easily farm drops from mobs.

Selecting your Fragments

When Salvaging an item, you can select the type of Talisman Fragment you'd like to receive. The higher your level, the higher the chance of success.

A key benefit of Magical Salvaging is the ability to extract a Talisman Fragment of your choice based on the stats on a piece of gear.

For example, if a piece of gear has Strength, Toughness, and Wounds, you'll be able to choose from any of those three stats when you break it down and extract the fragment.

Helpful Lists of Salvaging items

Besides Fragments, Magical Salvaging will also grant you Magical Essence and Gold Dust, both of which are needed for Talisman Making.

The level of the gear you Salvage will determine the level of the Fragment, Magical Essence, and Gold Dust you can receive.

Expand any list below for a full list of the types of possible items you can receive from Magical Salvaging.

List of Magical Essence

Leveling Salvaging

  • The level of item you salvage determines the crafting material that will be generated from the item, with a check on your Salvaging skill. To figure out what material you'll receive, simply multiply the item level of the item you're salvaging by 5, round down to the nearest multiple of 25, and note that the rarity of the item will generate the fragment delivered. For example, if I have a level 22 uncommon (green) item to salvage, it will return a level 100 uncommon fragment, as long as my Salvaging is at least 100 (22 times 5 equals 110, rounded down to the nearest multiple of 25 is 100). Note that this operates off of the item level of the gear, not the minimum level requirement.
  • Any class can Salvage, but if you're going to have one character with each gathering skill (Butchering, Cultivating, Scavenging), it's good to consider learning Salvaging on a class that you play often, potentially your main character. The reason for this is because the items that you obtain from epic quests, RvR influence rewards, etc. cannot be traded, but they can be salvaged. By leveling your salvaging and obtaining relatively easy purple fragments from breaking down RvR reward gear on your first, or main, character in the game, it can jumpstart you in successful talisman making.
