Vainglorious Set: Order Guide
This guide is for the Epic Quest Nothing in Vain, and will help you acquire the Vainglorious Set within Return of Reckoning.
Besides gear, this quest line also grants players access to a number of previously unavailable armor designs that match sets you'll unlock via RvR and PvE. These are listed in the guide with "Matching Visual Set" notes.
Before you get started
You can take the Vainglorious Quest at any level, but before starting, some important tips:
- This Epic Quest line may take you a number of hours to complete, (on average, 2-4 hours) so bring along friends, guildmates, or find others in LFG to make the experience more enjoyable.
- When grouping, a maximum of 6 people (one party) is recommended as only one party can gain kill credit at a time for the quest.
- Try to have at least 32 open spaces of Inventory if you want to keep every single item reward, and if you plan to complete this Quest in one session.
Because there is no level requirement for these quests, it is possible for strong players to carry lower level friends or others through these quests and earn them this gear early, even at level 1.
Step 1
You can begin this quest in the South of Nordland at Empire Chapter 1 or in Altdorf's Southeast corner.
Look for the dwarf Sindri Grothsson and speak to him to begin the quest. (In Altdorf, his exact location is 29k/51k.)
Step 2
Next, it's time to fly to Nordland! Do note that if you're above level 16, you'll be Debolstered, so most tactics and some skills may not work.
- If you've lost your original basic mount, you can buy another at the T1 Warcamp for 5 silver from the Griffon Supplier Quartermaster, who is directly in front of you upon arriving. This will save you a lot of time!
Head South and complete the Quest by killing the final boss within the Raven Host Vanguard Public Quest (PQ), then turn in the quest at the road just west of the PQ.
This will grant the Nordland Farmer's Belt (Matching Visual Set: Decimator) and a choice between four dyes: Empire Farmer Dark Granite, Empire Farmer Light Granite, Empire Farmer Tan, and Empire Farmer Light Brown.
Step 3
Accept the next part of the quest, and head north to complete the Ruins of Schloss Von Rubendorff Public Quest.
As before, your quest is to kill the final boss of the PQ. Once complete, head East to the Grey Lady Coaching in, and turn in the quest.
You will receive the Rubendorff Belt (Matching Visual set: Carnage) and your choice between Empire Black, Red, Ivory, Yellow, and Blue dyes.
Step 4
Accept the next part of the Quest, and then head the short run North to The Burning Windmill to complete this PQ.
Once you've defeated the final boss of the PQ, head back to Grey Lady Coaching in and turn in the quest to receive the Grey Lady Gloves (Matching Visual Set: Decimator) and your choice between Empire Farmer Dark Granite, Empire Farmer Light Granite, Empire Farmer Tan, and Empire Farmer Light Brown dye.
Step 5
Accept the next quest, and make your way Northwest to "The Norse are coming!" PQ.
- If you have any trouble burning tents in this PQ, just DPS them - it counts.
- To burn the Longships, just right click the box of torches located on the ships.
Kill the final boss in this PQ, and make your way back to the Grey Lady Coaching Inn to receive the Sea Watch belt (Matching Visual set:Tracker) and your choice between Empire Black, Red, Ivory, Yellow, and Blue dyes.
Step 6
Do you like spiders? You do now.
Accept the next quest, and make your way East through the forest to the Webworks PQ.
Kill all the little spiders and then a really big one, then make your way to back to the road.
Turn in the quest and receive the Emskrank Gloves (Matching Visual Set: Carnage) and your choice between Empire Farmer Dark Granite, Empire Farmer Light Granite, Empire Farmer Tan, and Empire Farmer Light Brown dye.
Step 7
Accept the next Quest and head across the road to the nearby Faewulf's Rest PQ.
Kill the boss of this PQ and head to Breur's Regiment to turn in the quest.
You'll receive the Faewulf's Shoulders (Matching Visual Set: Decimator) and your choice between Empire Farmer Dark Granite, Empire Farmer Light Granite, Empire Farmer Tan, and Empire Farmer Light Brown dye.
Step 8
Accept the next quest and follow the road northeast a short distance to the Pillager's Approach PQ.
Kill the boss of this PQ and return to Breuer's Regiment to receive Gauser's Gifted Shoulders (Matching Visual Set: Tracker) and your choice between Empire Black, Red, Ivory, Yellow, and Blue dyes.
Step 9
Now it's time to fly to Norsca, the land of excitement. Once there, head North to the Ulfenwyr PQ and prepare to meet some friends of Papa Nurgle.
After killing the Nurgle boss, return south to Empire Chapter 4 and turn in the quest to receive Ulfenwyr Shoulders (matching visual set: Carnage) and your choice between Empire Farmer Dark Granite, Empire Farm Light Granite, Empire Farmer Tan, and Empire Farmer Light Brown dye.
Step 10
Accept the next quest, and head Northeast to the Altar of the Bloodbane PQ.
Next, slaughter an entire family of cultists and then their Boss to complete the quest. Return back to Chapter 4 covered in cultist blood and contemplate your life decisions as you turn in the quest. Some classes will receive the Bloodbane Helm (Matches Visual set: Decimator) here, but only if your class has one listed in the Appearance Guide.
All players then get another choice between Empire Black, Red, Ivory, Yellow, and Blue dyes.
Step 11
Accept the next quest and make your way all the way North to Pit of the Forsaken. This is a hard PQ, so if you're doing this alone + debolstered, exercise a little caution.
Kill the PQ Boss and breathe a sigh of relief, because you're finally about to ditch that debolster. Head back to Empire Chapter 4 and turn in the quest.
Ironbreaker gets special treatment here and will gain the Gotland Greathelm (Matches Visual Set: Tracker), and all players can choose between more Empire Black, Red, Ivory, Yellow, and Blue dyes.
Step 12
Next stop: Troll Country! Accept the next part of the quest and use the Flight Master in Chapter 4 to arrive in Troll Country.
Take a moment to appreciate that you can finally use a mount with real movement speed bonuses, and then make your way up to the Deathstone Quarry Public Quest Northwest of the Empire War camp.
Purge the land of the invading Chaos monsters and kill their leader, a Magus who somehow lost his disc, to complete the quest.
Now head Northwest to Empire Chapter 5 and turn in the quest to receive the Suskarg Belt (Matching Visual set: Havoc/Obliterator) and your choice between Empire Farmer Dark Granite, Empire Farm Light Granite, Empire Farmer Tan, and Empire Farmer Light Brown dye.
Step 13
Accept the next quest chain and head southeast to The Blighted Farm PQ.
Once there, demonstrate your lack of knowledge regarding crops of any sort by instead murdering everyone and everything you find at the Farm, including a lovely Nurgle boss at the end.
Head to Empire Chapter 6 and turn in the quest to receive Felde Shoulders (Matching Visual set: Obliterator) and choose between Empire Farmer Dark Granite, Empire Farm Light Granite, Empire Farmer Tan, and Empire Farmer Light Brown dye.
Step 14
Accept the next part of the quest and head East to the Lissariel's Glade PQ.
Next, prove that not even literal trees can stop your wrath by chopping them up, killing their sprite friends, and defeating the boss "Deeproot" at the end of the PQ.
Now turn in the quest at Empire Chapter 7 just a few steps Southwest, and receive the Frontier Helm (Matching Visual set: Obliterator) and your choice between Empire Black, Red, Ivory, Yellow, and Blue dyes.
Step 15
You're tired of Troll Country, so accept the next quest and take the flight master at the Chapter 7 camp to fly to Troll Country --> then fly back to Ostland in order to arrive at the Empire Chapter 8 camp, much closer to the PQ.
Once there, head Southwest to the Nurenmir's Lancers PQ.
You know the drill by now. Kill them all. Once the Boss is defeated, use your War Report to any T2/T3 zone and then take the Flight Master to arrive back at the Empire Chapter 8.
Turn in the quest to receive Nurenmir's Belt (Matching Visual set: Keeper) and your choice between Empire Black, Red, Ivory, Yellow, and Blue dyes.
Step 16
Accept the next quest, and journey all the way Southwest to the Gore Wood Public Quest, where Khorne is holding a birthday party.
Trash Khorne's Birthday Party Public Quest and kill all of his champions just to make fun of him.
With the Boss defeated, head east to the WolfenBurg Inn / Empire Chapter 9 and turn in the quest to receive the Gorewood Shoulders (Matching Visual set: Havoc).
- Note: The Havoc shoulders have a unique visual appearance, and at the time of publishing this article, this quest is the only way in the game to earn them.
Step 17
Take a moment to hydrate and step away from your computer for a few minutes if you've done this all in one session. You're well over halfway done!
Step 18
Accept the next part of the Quest and either run or fly to High Pass. Once there, make your way to the Chaos Ruins Public Quest.
Next, attack a bunch of rocks at the PQ and show them who's boss. Defeat the boss and head to Empire Chapter 10 to turn in the quest.
Here, you'll receive the Humble Origins Belt (the first part of the Vanglorious Set!) and your choice between two very special dyes: Snow White and Arctic Blue.
- PSA: The Snow White dye is unbound, so you can trade it or sell it. Arctic Blue is bound to player, so accept it only if you plan to use it.
Step 19
Accept the next part of the Quest and head to the Lake of the Damned PQ.
Kill all the mobs at the PQ, right click some stakes, and be ready for a surprise Boss at the end that might give you a jumpscare.
Now head to Empire Chapter 11 to turn in the quest and receive Belt of the Damned (Matching Visual Set: Stalker) and your choice of 2 Snow White or Actic Blue Dyes.
Step 20
Accept the next Quest and head to the Shrine of Tzeentch PQ.
Kill the enemies, turn some blue crystals red, and dunk on the Hero mob like you dream of dunking on annoying DPS shamans.
Return to Empire Chapter 12 and turn in the Quest to receive The Bitter Wood belt (Matching Visual set: Devastator/Mayhem) and a new choice between 4 dyes: Order of the Griffon Black, Order of the Griffon Red, Order of the Griffon Brown, and Order of the Griffon Light Tan.
- PSA: Griffon Black Dye is bound-to-player, whereas the other options are not.
Step 21
It's time to leave the snow and ice behind, so accept the next part of the quest and then War Report, Fly, or follow the road to Talabecland.
Head over to the Bitterschaum Swamp in the southeast corner of the map and start killing things.
This time you'll need to get credit for defeating 4 different mobs near the PQ's end. You can find three in the top hut inside the camp, and the fourth on his own hanging out nearby with his Squig bros.
Stomp them all and return to Empire Chapter 14 to turn in the quest and receive the Bitterschaum Helm (Matching Visual set: Stalker) and the same choice of 4 Order of the Griffon Dyes: Black, Red, Brown, and Light Tan.
Step 22
Realize that you secretly adore cemeteries and would love to see more of one, especially one with Zombies. Accept the next quest and fly out of Talabecland, then back into Talabecland to place yourself near the next PQ, then just head next door to the Unterbaum Cemetery Public Quest.
Destroy the Zombies and burn a bunch of carts. Ponder how setting fire to carts spawns even more Zombies, and then kill the final boss of the PQ.
Return to Empire Chapter 14 and turn in the quest to receive the Death Deceived Cape, the second item in the Vainglorious Set, and another dip into the four Order of the Griffon dyes.
Step 23
It's time to graduate to the big leagues, so accept the next quest and either Fly or make your way east to Reikland.
Once there, head all the way South to the Heinrich Estate PQ.
Mow through the mobs outside the gates with the power of a murderous sentient lawnmower, then kill the mobs on the walls and inside the tower before defeating the boss.
Head to Empire Chapter 15 to turn in the Quest and receive the Heinrich Belt (Matching Visual set: Annihilator/Ruin) and your choice between Order of the Griffon Black, Red, Brown, or Light Tan dyes.
- PSA: The "Clear the Coutyard" part of this PQ wants you to kill the Sellswords within the tower.
Step 24
This is it! The final PQ! Accept the quest and head North to Castle Grauenburg.
The PQ mobs are humans, but technically bad ones, so feel no guilt as you make your way up the Castle stairs and kill every person, champion and Hero you meet.
Kill the final boss at the top floor and then head to Empire Chapter 16 to turn in the quest.
Here you receive the Celestial Portent Jewelry piece, the final piece of Vainglorious, and a choice between Order of the Griffon Black, Red, Brown, or Light Tan dyes.
With this, your Vainglorious set is complete - but you have a couple more special dyes awaiting you in the final steps of the quest.
Step 25
The Dwarf that started you upon this massive PQ-filled saga and through multiple zones wants to talk to you again, so fly back to Altdorf and speak with Sindri Grothson.
Doing so grants you and a choice between special dyes: Boltgun Metal, Burnished Gold, Dwarf Bronze, Mithril Silver, and Shining Gold.
- PSA: We recommend not picking Mithril Silver as you can get this color from any normal Dye merchant.
It's all over! It's finally... over.
Wait, what?
Step 26
Surprise! There's one more thing: Sindri's ancestors were once rich dwarves thanks to Gunbad, and he had a relative killed by a Giant there, so he's got one last grudge to settle: he wants you to head to Mount Gunbad and kill The Big Oaf, the first boss located in the Middle Wing of Gunbad.
- IMPORTANT: If you are on a Gunbad Lockout timer, you cannot earn credit for this quest.
After killing The Big Oaf in Gunbad's middle wing, head back to Sindri Grothson and turn in the quest to receive the Red-eye belt (matches Red-eye visual set) and get one more dip at a choice of his shiny dyes.
Step 27
This time, it's really over. Get up, get a drink, use the restroom, and leave your computer for a bit. You did it. You finally did it.
Congratulations on completing the Vainglorious Epic Quest!
Special thanks to <The Jempire> for their help making this guide possible!
